*¹Jean Temkin, author of More Charting for Profit, says the wave of negativity sweeping through South Africa may well have blinded us from the JSE's record performance last week.
"The list of negatives disturbing economic stability, locally and globally, grows longer. But we are so busy complaining about the effect on our lives that few noticed that the JSE overall index broke through its previous high last week," writes Temkin in Business Day. Read Jean Temkin's column as published in Business Day.
"What's exciting is that the JSE is the only major market index to do so."
"Some regard the share market as the barometer of a country's future economy. If this were true, the August and January dips and extreme volatility we recently experienced might have warned of our current woes. By the same token, a new high for our stock market could mean better times ahead."
Temkin believes that the JSE's positive growth trend is sustainable. "That is not to say that we'll not see some nasty dips like the one we saw in January but I see no reason why the current upward trend will not continue. The factors in our favour are our resources, both our mining resources and our ability to grow all kinds of crops. Our expertise in certain areas, for example Sasol that turns coal into petrol and lots of other things, is there."
