Aaaaaaagh, now I know why all my family and friends have been so scarce of late.
What I love about the race is that it is not all about expensive bikes ridden by French mountain men in tight clothing! It is also a gathering of mom's, dad's, children and the insanely brave - tackling one of the most challenging sporting events of its kind.
The tour itself can be traced back to 1978, held under the auspices of the Western Province Pedal Power Association [yes Neil, you worked there], the ride was supposed to be a low key event with 525 entrants. More than 35,000 cyclists from around the globe now attend this prestigious event which offers a unique experience and fun day out for participants and spectators alike.
Usually staged on the second Sunday of March, the race date this year is 11 March 2012, starting in Hertzog Boulevard and finishing in Green Point. For a fun family outing, pick a spot along the route and cheer on your family, friends and let's not forget the insane.
Be on the lookout for one of ours clients, Grier and some other equally nutty cyclists who are riding the Argus on A RETRO ICE CREAM BIKE for charity! With its 1 gear, 1 brake, weighing in at a strong 25 KGs built and has an extra 25 KGs of Bos Ice Tea packed into it for maximum pain. Click here to "see" the Insanity.
Having done the Argus in a fabulous 6 and half hours once myself here are some tips:
- Ride the Argus Cycle Tour from your chair in 9.55 minutes.
- What you eat and drink before and during the Cycle Tour can make or break your race.
- Never walk, runners walk, cyclist free wheel.
- Use lube, the last thing you want is that feeling like your saddle has had its way with you for 110km
- Sun cream is not overrated, skin cancer is.
- Girls if you get a puncture, do not bother to change the tyre. Just turn those cycling shorts into hot pants, cry a little and some guy will stop and do all the hard work for you.
- Like most things in life...start slowly.
- Take your wedding ring off
- Don't have a vasectomy 5 days before
- Do it in a superhero suit for maximum crowd support
- Don't do it in a superhero suit
- When you cross the finish line, claim it like a tour de France winner!
- Have fun!
We would love to know how many of our clients are doing the race this hear. Please go to our Facebook site and tell who you are and please come back and tell us how you did!
Wishing all cyclists a Happy and safe ride! |
