On 21st April 2010, the Governor of the SARB, Ms G Marcus issued a media statement warning the South African public against R200 counterfeit banknotes in circulation.
The media statement issued by the SARB Governor.
The Reserve Bank and the commercial banks are withdrawing all old series R200 banknotes that were printed between 1994 and 2005. These notes of the old series do not have the security features of the upgraded notes (as detailed in the media statement).
The SARB together with the commercial banks in South Africa request members of the public in South Africa to present these banknotes for exchange at the nearest commercial bank by the end of May 2010. After this date it will only be possible to present these banknotes to the South African Reserve Bank Branches for exchange.
It should be noted that the R200 banknotes of the upgraded series bearing the signatures of former Governor, Mr T T Mboweni, or the current Governor, Ms G Marcus, have the security features and are not affected by the current counterfeit problem. These banknotes will remain in circulation.

PLEASE NOTE: No illegal counterfeit bank notes however will be exchanged! You are therefore encouraged to re-familiarise yourselves with the security features on the South African banknotes and to examine them on receipt. Do not hesitate or feel embarrassed about holding a banknote up to the light. Look, feel and tilt the banknotes to ascertain the security features.
